Québec, le 12 septembre 2019 – Galerie.a est fière de présenter le plus récent travail de l’artiste Ève Cadieux. Après son exposition bilan TOUTES CES CHOSES, présentée à Montréal en 2017 et cet automne à Trois-Rivières, Ève Cadieux commence un nouveau chapitre de production avec l’exposition Empreintes et dérivés.
Ève Cadieux nous revient avec des vues de marchés aux puces, explorant toujours une fascination pour les objets glanés au fil du temps, pour l’obsolescence inévitable des choses et pour les références à l’histoire de l’art. Passant par plusieurs villes d’Europe, l’artiste cadre depuis quelques années les objets accumulés et, après l’acte de la prise de vue, l’empreinte lumineuse redonne vie à ces espaces de commerces éphémères, où les ramassis et collections racontent malgré eux des histoires intimes et collectives.
Réels témoins d’appropriation par la photographie, les œuvres font ici référence à l’acte photographique lui-même en interrogeant la place de l’artiste dans l’image. Ève Cadieux fixe les objets en collectionnant à son tour les dérivés de ces choses inertes qui retiennent son attention parmi les empilages spontanés ou les étalages préparés avec soin par les vendeurs-collectionneurs.
Marqué par le retour à l’exploration en atelier, Empreintes et dérivés apparaît comme un projet de relecture et de continuité. Avec un jeu de nouvelles contraintes, l’artiste exploite la force des petits et moyens formats carrés, tout en s’invitant librement dans l’espace photographié avec l’ajout de transferts d’images, de dessins, d’interventions à l’encaustique et de mots-valises.

Quebec City, September 12, 2019 – Galerie.a is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent work by Ève Cadieux. After TOUTES CES CHOSES, a retrospective of her wide-ranging oeuvre presented in Montreal in 2017 and Trois-Rivières in fall 2019, the artist is embarking on a new production phase with the exhibition Empreintes et dérivés.
Ève Cadieux’s new exhibition collects images of flea markets, reflecting her abiding fascination with objects gleaned over time, inevitable obsolescence, and art-historical references. Over years, the artist travelled to multiple European countries to produce still lifes of the objects informally gathered for sale; after capturing these tableaux, her reworked images reconsider and renew the idea of these ephemeral yet timeless commercial spaces where objects and collections become the silent bearers of intimate and collective stories.
The works on show represent the artists’ use of photography to process and construe, interrogating both the photographic act itself and the artist’s place in the finished image. By focusing on her chosen images, Cadieux herself becomes a collector of the residual meanings that accrete in the inert objects that call out to her from random-seeming heaps or painstakingly arranged displays they have been consigned to by collectors and sellers.
Marking the artist’s return to studio work, Empreintes et dérivés represents both a rereading and a new chapter of Ève Cadieux’s ongoing artistic project. With a series of self-imposed constraints, she exploits the power of small- and medium-format square images, while freely entering the photographic space by altering the photographs with image transfers, drawings, encaustic, and invented portmanteau words.
